Weekly Fortnite Tips – 1 – Controls, Pickaxes, and Reloading

The competition we’re seeing this season in Fortnite: Battle Royale is fierce, to say the least. But this isn’t even the end of it. With the onset of the first competitive LTM, Solo Showdown, and Epic’s promise of more to come, having a leg up on your opponent has never been more important. Changing Controls & Reassigning Keys

The first pro tip I have for you today may seem simple, or like a no-brainer, but this is a huge thing that (especially by console players) often goes overlooked. Building is a skill that is becoming more and more difficult to work around, but there are controller settings tailored specifically to make it easier. As for you guys on PC,  try clustering your build commands around your movement keys.  This feels strange at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll be glad you did.

Use Your Pickax

When you aren’t fighting or hiding, you should be scavenging.  When you get to the end of the match you’re going to need it. Hit what you run by when moving towards the eye. Open ammo crates and take all the ammunition you come across. It doesn’t weigh a thing and just because you don’t have a gun that uses it now doesn’t mean you or a teammate won’t. When running through a cluster of items equip your pickax so you only pick up ammunition and resources and don’t accidentally trade out weapons you want to keep.

Don’t Wait to Reload

If you’re in action and you have another weapon to switch to, do it. Don’t wait to reload that shotgun. While reloading  during a firefight, you’re at a decided disadvantage. Your movement slows and you aren’t returning fire. This could very easily mean death in the open. Switching weapons takes much less time and there is no movement penalty. Just switch guns, finish the fight, and reload when you get to safety.

Pro Tip: Like the pump shotgun and the bolt-action rifles but hate reload time? Carry 2!
