Travis Mccrackin / May 4
Hello! Travis here at Launch Pad Gaming! Today we’re going to talk a little about who made Fortnite, how it began, and how it became so darn popular. Odds are you’ve probably heard of the video game sensation that is Fortnite over the last year. If you haven’t, or if you would like to know more about the game that has taken the world by storm (pun intended) read on…
So, what is Fortnite anyways? Well, it’s a video game in which players can fight zombies together, or each other on a map with up to 100 people in a single round. Fortnite launched last July as a co-op survival game but didn’t really start making waves until the launch of its free-to-play mode, Battle Royale, a couple of months later.
As the year progressed so did Fortnite’s popularity. You could call its rise meteoric (pause for laughter) as it quickly grew beyond the realm of gamers. The most notable example of this would be when college basketball player Nolan Gerrity likened what was probably the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA to his first Fortnite victory.
Conceived in 2011 by Epic Games, Fortnite was the first game to be developed using the Unreal 4 engine. Originally set to be released in 2013, Fortnite was to be a departure from Epic’s Gears of War series and would only be available on PC. For various reasons, Fortnite’s reveal was delayed until the closed beta launched in the Fall of 2015. Around 50,000 players participated. Almost two years later, in June 2017, a 2018 release was announced for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Early access was to be available the next month, July. Thus began the phenomena.
Since its launch, Fortnite has become an extremely popular game. It has even been compared to titles such as Minecraft and World of Warcraft. There are many factors involved here. As streaming gameplay has become more and more relevant so too has the need for games that attract a more general audience. Fortnite’s toony graphics and lack of bloodshed supply this. Cartoon violence has always had a pass it seems. This opens the game to players of all ages.
What’s in it for the older players? Well, Fortnite is riddled with pop culture references that identify with the older crowd, like me I guess. One example of this is the Scrubs dance. I loved that show.
Fortnite has also been mentioned by notable public figures such as college basketball player Nolan Gerrity, hip-hop star Drake, and professional gamer and streamer Ninja. This combined with constant updates and its high-quality gameplay makes it easy to see why Fortnite is so popular.
Come on! Join the sensation! Season 4 just started making it the perfect time to join if you haven’t already. Did I mention that Battle Royale is free-to-play?
