Epic Said they had big news, and they sure as hell didn’t disappoint. Just a few minutes ago Epic announced $100,000,000 would go to fund eSports tournaments for the hit game Fortnite
If you’re picturing Dr.Evil, pinky to mouth, demanding money from various world governments, you are not alone. Epic told us they would have a huge announcement coming weeks ago about competitive Fortnite. I, for one, assumed it would be about setting up a league, or official rules. NOPE. While it may not be quite as concrete, I’ll sure take $100,000,000. It seems as if nothing is going to stand in the way of Fortnite becoming an official eSport…
Just after the end of the Solo Showdown, giving us no recovery time, Epic decides to hit us with a $100,000,000 announcement. And this is just for the 2018-2019 year. Epic knows how to surprise a guy, for sure. It seems Epic has no plans to make anything so strict as a traditional sport, though, saying-
“We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.”
Maybe Fortnite was never poised to be the next eSport. Maybe it was always supposed to be bigger, more inclusive. It’s possible we don’t even have a name for what Fortnite and games like it will be called competitively. Viewer Sports, vSports? Who knows what Epic might have up their sleeve? But we at Launch Pad Gaming will be right here the entire way keeping you up to date. This is Travis at LPG. Thanks for reading.
